63-year-old with history of mental illness attacks stranger with machete

KAJANG: A man with a history of mental illness attacked a man with a machete, leading to a chase and scuffle on Tuesday (Oct 6).

"On Tuesday, at around 3.30pm at a restaurant in Taman Sri Tanjung Semenyih, the suspect came from behind and struck the complainant at his back.

"The complainant was injured from the attack. His friends then chased the suspect. There was a scuffle that ensued, in which the suspect was injured," said Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Zaid Hassan in a statement Thursday (Oct 8).

He added that the complainant called the police for help and an arrest was made.

"The complainant does not know why he was attacked.

"The suspect, aged 63 years old, was arrested and we seized two machetes and a knife. Records showed he had priors for criminal cases. Checks also showed that he had recieved psychiatric treatment from the Ulu Kinta hospital in Perak previously," he said, adding that the man has been remanded until Oct 10.
