KANGAR: Two men drowned after their car skidded and plunged into an irrigation channel near a padi field in Utan Aji here following a police chase on Tuesday (Sept 29).

Kangar OCPD Supt Wari Kiew said the suspects aged 21 and 25 had fled from a police roadblock in Jalan Lencongan Dua here, prompting the Motorcycle Patrol Unit (URB) to go after them.

"During the chase, the suspects' car skidded and plunged into an irrigation channel near a padi field before sinking," he said in a statement on the incident that happened at 10am.

Villagers who saw the incident helped to retrieve the suspects from the sinking vehicle.

"However, both were lifeless when they were pulled out of the wrecked car," said Supt Wari, adding that the suspects drowned after they failed to get out safely.

The suspects were pronounced dead by medical personnel who arrived at the scene at about 11.40am.

Supt Wari said checks found that the car used by the suspects was reported stolen in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur.

He said the suspects were also found to have a record of six prior criminal and drug offences between them.

The bodies have been sent to Tuanku Fauziah Hospital for a post-mortem.

The case is being investigated under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
