Man livestreams video of his violent behaviour in mall on social media

SIBU: The 24-year who was subdued by shoppers and then arrested by the police for creating a commotion in a shopping mall here broadcast the incident live on his social media account.

The video, running at almost 23 minutes, is still available on his Facebook page and has recorded 1,700 shares and 1,000 comments.

At the beginning of the video, the man is seen in his rented room on Laichee Lane here getting dressed before riding a motorcycle to the shopping mall.

"I'm hungry and heading to a fast-food restaurant in the mall.

"If I am not given free food, I will smash the glass door of the restaurant," he is heard saying in Melanau in the footage recorded on Sunday (Sept 27).

Most commenters condemned his action, saying he had tarnished the good name of the town.

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said the suspect from Matu went straight to a watch shop at 2.30pm that day.

"He asked the owner for the most expensive watch in the shop, and turned aggressive, so the owner quickly called the security guards," he said.

ACP Stanley said when a security guard asked the suspect to leave, he lunged at the guard.

"The suspect was seen kicking and punching the guard before knocking him to the ground.

"Three passers-by stepped in to pin the suspect down and tie him up," he added.

A police team on beat duty then arrested the suspect.

The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for domestic violence, along with Sections 506 and 427 of the code for criminal intimidation.
