KLUANG: The carcass of a female tapir was found in Jalan Kahang Barat here.

The 350kg tapir was believed to have wandered off to the road from its habitat in the Kluang Forest Reserve, said Johor Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) director Salman Saaban.

He said a member of the public reported the roadkill at around 8am on Monday (Sept 28).

“The tapir had injuries on its head, which we believe were from a vehicle and which caused its death.

“The straight road where the carcass was found gets quite dark at night and in the early morning, which could be contributing factors of the accident, ” he said in a statement Monday.

He added that the carcass was buried by the department at a location nearby.

Salman said that this was the seventh tapir that has been found dead in Johor this year.

“Road users are reminded to stay alert and be careful especially when travelling near forest or wildlife habitat areas, ” he said.
