PETALING JAYA: Fourteen Umno MPs have denied allegations that they will support PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's bid to be the next prime minister.
Their names were among the list of 19 Umno MPs allegedly supporting Anwar who claimed he had “overwhelming support” from Umno and Barisan Nasional MPs to form a new government.
Anwar has yet to release the names of MPs allegedly supporting him.
The validity of the list, which has gone viral, is in question as about three-quarters of the MPs on the list have denied any involvement.
Of the 19 MPs, only Baling MP Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim and Kimanis MP Datuk Mohamad Alamin have yet to issue any statements.
Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, whose name was also on the list, had said that Umno and Barisan Nasional could not stop their MPs from supporting Anwar.
Padang Rengas MP Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said he would only withdraw his support for the Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin if snap polls were to be called.
Pekan MP Datuk Seri Najib Razak's name was also on the list.
The 14 MPs who have denied supporting Anwar are Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid (Padang Terap), Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor (Putrajaya), Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh (Besut), Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim (Arau), Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman (Pasir Salak), Tan Sri Noh Omar (Tanjong Karang), and Datuk Ahmad Maslan (Pontian).
Other MPs who have denied supporting Anwar are Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin (Kinabatangan), Datuk Ahmad Nazlan Idris (Jerantut), Datuk Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub (Machang), Datuk Mohd Nizar Zakaria (Parit), Datuk Hasbullah Osman (Gerik), Datuk Seri Hasan Arifin (Rompin), and Ramli Mohd Nor (Cameron Highlands).
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng has also said that they would not accept Umno under the leadership of Zahid and Najib.
