PETALING JAYA: If any members of the government are determined to withdraw their support from the current government, it is best to resign, says Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein (pic).

Furthermore, Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should be ashamed of his attempts to take over the Federal Government, as the country is facing the Covid-19 pandemic, said Hishammuddin.

The Foreign Minister claimed Anwar did not take note of the concern of the people and only wanted to fulfil his personal agenda to be the next prime minister.

"Personally, Umno should not entertain Anwar's propaganda. I believe that the main aim of his press conference was to distract focus on the upcoming Sabah polling day,” said the former Umno vice-president in a statement on Thursday (Sept 24).

Anwar had held a press conference on Wednesday (Sept 23), claiming that he had the majority support of MPs to form the next Federal Government.

Hishammuddin said such talk that Anwar has the majority to form the government was not something new or shocking.

"Such propaganda has been made by Anwar repeatedly. He has said before in April 2008, September 2008, and February 2020.

"If he really enjoys two-thirds support of the Dewan Rakyat, please reveal to the public how many lawmakers are supporting him, including those from Umno who have betrayed," he said.

Hishammuddin said that the party should instead focus its efforts to win the Sabah state election.

"My principle is clear and firm, I agreed to join the Cabinet based on the principle and support towards Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to lead the country," he said.

"In any form of uncertainty, all Cabinet ministers and government lawmakers must give their full support to the prime minister.

"Let us not hold a senior government post, enjoying all the perks, but at the same time, do not support the leadership.

"Let this be a reminder to all Ministers, deputy ministers, and head of government-linked companies who have been appointed.

"We have to focus our efforts to rebuild the country and not get involved in a political ploy that will not bring any benefits," said Hishammuddin.
