Cops destroy seized illicit drugs worth RM14.6mil

JOHOR BARU: Various types of seized illicit drugs worth RM14.6mil have been destroyed by Johor police after the cases were dealt with in court.

Johor police chief Comm Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said the destroyed drugs were seized between 2008 to 2019, involving 3,844 cases.

The drugs, including heroin, cannabis, ketamine, methamphetamine, methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) in various forms, were sent to a designated centre in Negri Sembilan to be destroyed, he said.

“Police work does not just stop when the suspect is charged in court.

“We have to ensure that the seized items are handled and destroyed properly in accordance with a strict set of standard operating procedures, ” he told a press conference at the state police headquarters yesterday.

Comm Ayob also said police busted two syndicates which had been supplying drugs in Johor Baru for the past two years.

“The two syndicates, led by different leaders, have been getting their supplies from the northern parts of the country before processing and distributing them, ” he said. In the first case, three raids were carried out in Iskandar Puteri and Johor Baru on Sept 16.

The raids led to the arrest of five men, a woman and a Singaporean man, aged 25 to 62 years old.

“The 25-year-old leader of the syndicate called Xiang, was also arrested and we seized RM170,000 worth of drugs such as Eramin 5 pills, Ecstasy pills and powder, ganja, ketamine and heroin, ” he said.

He added that on Sept 19, five more raids were carried out in the Kulai and Kluang areas with the arrest of five men and a woman aged between 17 and 38 years old.

“Along with that, three and four bank accounts, respectively used in the drug transactions totalling RM26,483 were also frozen, ” said Comm Ayob.

Other seized items included jewellery, money and cars, he added.

Seven out of the 13 suspects tested positive for drugs and nine of them had previous criminal records.

All the suspects in both cases have been placed under remand for seven days until Sept 26.
