SEMPORNA: In a snap state election crowded with contenders, a candidate with the name Manis Buka Mohd Darah (pic) is piquing interest.
However, as Manis Buka explains it, her name is actually a typographic error during the registration of her birth and it was supposed to be “Manis Muka”.
Affectionately known among her constituents as Manis Muka, which means “sweet face”, the mother of 10, from Parti Warisan Sabah, is defending her seat in Bugaya.
“The name actually originated from my ancestors,” said the 65-year-old.
“Manis Muka was the name of the most beautiful woman living on the island (in Semporna).
“That was why my late parents named me Manis Muka,” she added.
When Manis Buka was in primary school, visitors to her school would often ask to see her because of her unique name.
“I cried and asked my late father to change my name but he refused, saying that I was named after my ancestor,” she said.
Manis Buka, who is the Wanita chief for Semporna Warisan, is being challenged by six other candidates from Perikatan Nasional, Usno, Parti Perpaduan Rakyat Sabah (PPRS), Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS) and two independent candidates.
The incumbent assemblywoman, who has been in the political scene since 1985, said this was her constituency’s first seven-cornered fight.
However, she expressed confidence in her capability to defend the seat with a larger majority this time. — Bernama
