Six people reported missing in two separate fishing boat tragedies in Sarawak

MIRI: Six people went missing in two separate fishing boat tragedies caused by the current turbulent weather in northern and southern Sarawak.

In the Tatau district in northern Sarawak, two middle-aged fishing enthusiasts were reported missing off Kuala Serupai.

A report was lodged at 12.30 Thursday (Sept 17) by family members.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said a search and rescue operation had started.

"The family of the missing persons said the two went missing during bad weather at the platform area where they were fishing.

"A family member lodged a police report after failing to contact them on their handphone," said the department.

Meanwhile, four people went missing after a boat capsized at Tanjung Po, off the coastal shores of Bako National Park, in southern Sarawak.

"Five men were said to be in the boat. One of them was rescued today by fishermen, ” said the department.

"The other four are still missing after their boat capsized.

"A police report was lodged at 10pm Wednesday (Sept 16).

“At 9am today, the Muara Tebas maritime complex was turned into a search and rescue operation centre, ” it added.

Sarawak is being battered by bad weather.
