DUNGUN (Bernama): A sun bear that appeared in Kampung Baru, Kuala Abang, three days ago has residents concerned for the safety of children going to school and the impact on daily routines such as going to sea.
Kuala Abang Kampung Baru community management council chairman Shafie Mamat said Tuesday (Sept 15) that he believes the roaming bear is also destroying plants grown by residents.
"I had heard that some people had crossed paths with bears, but lately the situation has become worrying because there is an adult bear that has damaged trees, like coconut and banana plants, ” he said when contacted Tuesday.
He said they will report it to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia (Perhilitan) soon.
Terengganu Perhilitan director, Dr Abdul Malek Mohd Yusof, said they will still investigate without a report and "if what has gone viral is true, we will take appropriate action and set a trap to transfer the animal to a national park”.
On Monday (Sept 14, a Facebook user uploaded a 15-second video of a black bear destroying residents’ plants. - Bernama
