KOTA KINABALU: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) is defending its decision to up the number of seats it is contesting from 15 to 22, says party secretary-general Datuk Jahid Jahim.Jahid said PBS was not being greedy, as claimed by many, but was taking a defensive position in order to secure more winning seats for Perikatan Nasional.
“We were prepared for a friendly contest from day one. We expected multiple contests from partners and we were ready to defend our position, ” he said.
PBS sprang a surprise during nominations on Saturday, despite initially stating its intention to contest just 15 seats.
Jahid said PBS was taking the current skirmishes with its allies in its own stride.
He noted that the opposition Gabungan Rakyat Sabah, comprising Perikatan, Sabah Barisan Nasional and PBS, failed to agree on who should withdraw during a seat allocation meeting with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin in Kuala Lumpur.
Emotions were high among those who attended the two meetings chaired by Hamzah and they could not agree which party should withdraw, said Jahid, who is defending his Tamparuli seat.
Jahid also claimed that they knew other opposition parties were going to contest in seats allocated to PBS.
“A day before nomination, senior leaders monitoring the constituencies allocated to us found that colleagues and partners from Barisan and Perikatan were going for our necks by putting up candidates and independents for open friendly contests. It was clear, ” he said.
