MIRI: Flood victims are being evacuated in the Kapit division in Sarawak while several schools in the interior Miri division have closed due to rising water levels.
The Sarawak Disaster Relief Management Committee opened two evacuation centres, one each in the Kapit and Song districts.
Stadium Kapit has been turned into a flood relief shelter.
"Evacuations aided by the Fire and Rescue Department are proceeding. So far, 56 flood victims have been transported to the Stadium Kapit evacuation centre.
"In Song district, SK Nanga Embuan has been turned into an evacuation centre.
"So far, 126 flood victims have been transported there," the committee said in a statement on Tuesday (Sept 15).
The worst hit settlements in Kapit are the Rumah Philimon longhouse as well as Kampung Muhibbah and Kampung Baru Kapit.
In the Song district, the worst hit longhouse is Rumah Kulleh.
In northern Sarawak, schools in the Baram district about 200km away from Miri have been affected by rising floods.
SK Long Bemang is the worst hit, with about 200 students affected.
Other schools which have been temporarily closed are SK Long Loyang, SK Long Lenei and SK Long Sobeng, which have a combined total of about 400 students.
The worst hit settlement in Baram district is Long Bemang, where four longhouse blocks have been inundated by about a metre of water, affecting about 600 villagers.
Heavy rain has been lashing northern and central Sarawak for the past three days.
