KOTA KINABALU: A warm reception from voters is encouraging MCA’s Dr Chang Kee Ying to carry on fighting.

The dentist is always the one making others nervous in her clinic, but now, the tables have turned as she campaigns for the first time.

“I am nervous because I know sometimes voters have their grouses, concerns and complaints, ” she said.

“Who knows how they will treat me when they see me during my walkabouts?” said the Barisan Nasional candidate for Likas.

However, Dr Chang’s nerves were somewhat calmed when people she met on her first day of campaigning on Sunday were more encouraging than angry.

“Many gave me words of encouragement.

“They were glad that a new and young face is coming out to contest, ” said the 32-year-old.

She said many voiced their grouses but they were not angry about it, just mostly disappointed.

Dr Chang, who is facing a seven-way fight, said it was inevitable that throughout her walkabouts “one or two” would be cold towards her.

“That is all right... they have the right to be frustrated.

“We just need to explain our struggles, our vision and hope that they understand we are here to help, ” she said.

She hopes to see Likas develop economically and socially, and promised to help resolve grouses of the people if she gets their mandate.

“Give me a chance to help you, give this newbie an opportunity to serve the people of Likas, ” she said.

Dr Chang revealed that she looked up to Sabah Wanita MCA chief Dr Pamela Yong, who was a former candidate for Luyang.

Yong, she said, was a woman with principles, direction and a clear idea of what she wants out of life as well as how she plans to go about things.

“I learnt a lot from her and continue to gather knowledge from other more experienced leaders in MCA, ” she said.

Dr Chang is facing incumbent Tan Lee Fatt of DAP-Warisan Plus; Lu Siau Wee @ Jeff (PCS), Daniel Isaac Hoong (Usno), Chong Chee Vui (PPRS), Sim Fui (LDP) and independent candidate Melanie Chia come Sept 26.
