KOTA KINABALU: Not only is Upko contesting in the Sabah state election for the first time under its own logo, it is also the first time that party president Datuk Wilfred Madius Tangau (pic) is going for a state seat.

Upko will be contesting under its “Mount Kinabalu” logo, with Madius going for the Kiulu seat held by Datuk Joniston Bangkuai of PBS.

Madius is in a six-cornered fight for the seat which sits on the foothills of Mount Kinabalu.

“This is my first time contesting for an assemblyman’s post and I am taking this step to ensure the continuity of efforts planned by the caretaker state government, ” he said.

Madius was the first candidate to hand in his nomination papers at Dewan Masyarakat Kiulu at 9.03am yesterday.

Other candidates jostling for the seat are incumbent Joniston, LDP’s Rozylyn @ Rosalyn Gelunu, Parti Cinta Sabah’s Andau Yasun @ Bruno and Independents Jolianis Lampog and Dominic Yasun.

Upko is contesting in 12 of the 73 state seats in the coming polls this Sept 26.

Upko was previously a Barisan Nasional component party but left after the 14th General Election to throw its support behind Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal and help form the state government in 2018.

It is contesting for the first time as a partner under Warisan Plus, which comprises Parti Warisan Sabah, PKR, DAP and Parti Amanah Negara.
