MELAKA: Former Yang-di Pertua Negeri Tun Dr Mohd Khalil Yaakob (pic) now has a prime street in the heart of the historic city here named after him.
The previous Jalan Merdeka has been renamed Jalan Tun Khalil Yaakob since mid-August.
In July, the Melaka Legislative Assembly had passed the suggestion made by Kota Laksamana assemblyman Low Chee Leong to have the 1.3km long road from Menara Taming Sari here to the OCBC bank building named after the former governor.
Low said Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali had not objected when he brought up the suggestion that a street be named after Khalil.
Khalil, 82, served as Yang-di Pertua Negeri from 2004 to June 4,2020
He was also previously the Mentri Besar of Pahang. He was replaced by Tun Dr Mohd Ali Rustam.
