Penang cops nab duo, including 16-year-old, over snatch theft

BALIK PULAU: Two people, including a 16-year-old, have been nabbed for alleged involvement in a snatch theft here committed early this month.

Balik Pulau OCPD Supt A. Anbalagan said the teenager was arrested together with his 24-year-old accomplice here on Tuesday (Aug 25).

"The suspects were remanded for four days until Aug 28," he said in a statement.

Supt Anbalagan said the suspects are also being investigated for other robbery cases in the district.

He said checks found that the 24-year-old suspect was released from prison early this month.

He said the suspects were not working and both had records for prior crimes as well as drug offences.

On Aug 12, a 53-year-old school assistant was injured after an attempted snatch theft near Jalan Air Putih.

In the 5pm incident, the victim fell from her motorcycle after two men tried to grab her bag.

She sustained broken arms and several bruises on her face.

The case is being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt while committing a robbery which provides for a maximum jail term of 20 years, a fine and or whipping upon conviction.
