KOTA KINABALU: A proposal by Barisan Nasional to form a grand coalition of all opposition parties in Sabah was shot down by the local-based Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS) and Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

Both PCS president Datuk Seri Anifah Aman and LDP president Datuk Chin Su Phin made it clear that their respective parties will work independently as a local opposition party.

Anifah said he was thankful to the Barisan leadership for considering PCS into the proposed grand opposition coalition but reaffirmed that they stood by their stand to go it alone.

“As president of PCS, I would like to repeat and firmly state again that our Parti Cinta Sabah will not be an alliance or in coalition with any party for the coming election.

“We will contest enough seats to form the next government, ” he said Monday (Aug 24) in response to Barisan chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's plans to form a grand coalition of Sabah opposition parties to contest the polls.

Chin, whose party left Sabah Barisan after the May 2018 general election, said LDP has been consistent that it will work on its own in the coming state elections.

“We are not going to work with Umno or Barisan, we have said that we will work independently. This is our stand all this while, ” said Chin, whose party has brought back its former president Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat to lead the elections.

During the Slim by-election campaign on Sunday (Aug 23), Zahid disclosed that they hoped to hold negotiations with PCS and LDP who were among opposition parties in Sabah to share the 73-state seats at stake.

The three-party Sabah Barisan led by Sabah Umno are currently part of the opposition coalition that includes Sabah Bersatu, Sabah STAR and Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS).

“We hope to form a coalition of all these parties together with Sabah Barisan so that there is only one opposition coalition in Sabah. We offer a new deal through a special manifesto for Sabah voters, ” he was quoted as saying.

Zahid was confident that the seat distributions would be finalised at least a week before nomination day on Sept 12 and they hoped that the Barisan logo would be used.
