2,000 M’sian students enrol in Taiwan varsities

SOME 2,000 students from Malaysia will be pursuing their undergraduate studies in Taiwan this year despite the Covid-19 pandemic, Sin Chew Daily reported.

According to the Malaysia Federation of Alumni Association of Taiwan Universities, Taiwan decided in June to accept foreign students from countries which had done well to curb the spread of the virus, including Malaysia.

“After receiving the news, we started to make preparations. In less than two months, we managed to help most students sort out the administrative work, ” said its president Datuk Lawrence Ting Siew Haw.Problems arising from the shortage of flights, visa issues and Covid-19 prevention standard operating procedures were sorted out by the federation.

Ting said they had arranged for students to board flights on Aug 20,23 and 27 to Taipei.

“After they arrive at Taoyuan International Airport, they will be sent to quarantine centres.

“The representatives from each university will also be there, so parents can rest assured that their children will be taken care of, ” he added.

According to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia sends about 4,000 students to Taiwan each year.

However, according to its representative Anne Hung, the pandemic has caused the number to be halved.

Hung said students undergoing quarantine after arriving in Taiwan would be given a T$1,000 (RM141.84) subsidy.

> Fans are wondering how actress Jacqueline Wong (pic) continues to live a life of seeming luxury in Hong Kong – one of the world’s most expensive cities – despite being unemployed for over a year, China Press reported.

Quoting Hong Kong-based magazine East Week, Wong was seen dressed in Gucci T-shirts and carrying a variety of designer handbags.

According to the report, the apartment Wong is renting costs HK$50,000 (RM26,900) a month.

Some fans are speculating that her rumoured paramour, Lai Man Wang from Cantopop music group RubberBand, is helping her out.

They were said to be an item following Wong’s return from the United States last December after a self-imposed exile.

They were first spotted buying dog food together in February.

Lai is said to come from a wealthy background as his family recently bought a condominium in Mong Kok, one of Hong Kong’s most famous shopping areas.

It was earlier reported that Wong took a hiatus from acting after she was caught cheating on ex-boyfriend Kenneth Ma with married singer Andy Hui in April last year.
