ALOR SETAR: Nearly 1,000 villagers in Kedah’s Tawar district have been screened for Covid-19 following the emergence of a new cluster where nine members of a family were found to be infected.

The villagers queued up as early as 7.45am yesterday at the Tawar health clinic to undergo a nasal swab test and throat swab test.

Maniwil Annomuthu, the constituency assistant to Baling MP Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim, said villagers from Taman Sheikh Fadzir and Kampung Baru Tawar were given priority to be tested. He said villagers from Pekan Tawar and other nearby areas were also present for the tests.

The main spreader, he said, was a 53-year-old trader who sold groceries by van from one village to another around Tawar.

“His brother passed away in July and he attended a prayer ceremony at his brother’s house in Bukit Mertajam (Penang).

“To date, he and eight family members have tested positive for Covid-19 and are being warded at Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (Alor Setar). Today, another four family members were ordered to comply with the Home Surveillance Order for 14 days, ” said Maniwil.

The event, which was held on July 31 and Aug 1, was estimated to have been attended by 30 people.

The Tawar cluster is the second in Kedah after the Sivagangga cluster where the index case, nasi kandar eatery owner Nezar Mohamed Sabur Batcha was sentenced to 20 months’ jail and fined RM12,000 by the Jitra Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.Baling OCPD Supt Syed Basri Syed Ali said no roadblocks had been set up at the main access roads to Tawar and other parts of the area.

In George Town, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the Covid-19 case at a private hospital on Penang island had been identified as being from a Kedah cluster.

“As it came from Kedah, it will be treated as a case from the cluster there, as announced by the Health Ministry.

“We will make sure there is full compliance with the standard operating procedure, ” Chow said at a press conference at Komtar yesterday.
