BATANG PADANG: The Slim by-election will gauge whether Barisan Nasional will reign again, says Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

The former premier said that although it is a state seat by-election, it is related to the current political scenario in Malaysia.

''The Slim by-election is not just for the voters here, but it has its significance and relation to the country's current political scenario in general.

''This is a meaningful and important by-election to us to give a clear signal in making the right decision to the people, '' he said during a community programme with Felda residents at Felda Besout here on Saturday (Aug 15).

Some 250 residents turned up for the event, which saw Najib mingling with the locals briefly, including throwing his support to Barisan Nasional candidate for the by-election, Mohd Zaidi Aziz.

Najib noted that the Slim by-election can be treated as a continuation from a series of by-elections from Cameron Highlands to Chini, whereby each one that was contested by Barisan and on the Muafakat Nasional ticket together with its ally, PAS, had won.

''Many said Barisan was buried in the grave when we lost in the last general elections. Many said we wouldn't be able to make a comeback.

''But today, what we see is that if we can continue the winning trend from the previous by-elections, many say that Barisan and Muafakat will hold power.

''This means we have risen. We were not defeated, but only stumbled for a while, '' he said.

Noting that Barisan is still a formidable force, he called on the people to make it their prime choice on polling day.

''We can win in style.

''We want to give a clear signal that the time is here for Barisan to rule again, '' he added.
