KUALA LUMPUR: The government has appointed a total of 15 politicians as chairmen and board members of Minister of Finance Incorporated (MKD) companies as of July this year, the Dewan Rakyat was told.

In a written reply, the Finance Ministry also revealed that out of 15 government statutory bodies under the ministry, only two were politicians.

Among them is Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who is chairman of Khazanah Nasional Bhd and Yayasan Pelaburan Bumiputera.

Ramli Mohd Nor (BN-Cameron Highlands) had also been appointed as Amanah Raya chairman, while Datuk Hasbullah Othman (BN-Gerik) was appointed as Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad chairman.

Others include Datuk Jalaluddin Alias (BN-Jelebu) as UDA Holdings Bhd chairman, Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid (BN-Padang Terap) as the Tenaga Nasional Berhad chairman.

Datuk Seri Amin Ali (PPBM-Gombak) was appointed as a Khazanah director, while Datuk Seri Hassan Arifin (BN-Rompin) had been appointed as the chairman of Pengurusan Aset Air Berhad.

Meanwhile, Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim (BN-Batang Lupar) was appointed as Padi Beras Nasional (Bernas) chairman, Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman (BN-Pasir Salak) as the chairman of Prasarana Malaysia Bhd.

Libaran MP Datuk Zakaria Mohd Edris was appointed as Perbadanan Nasional Bhd (PNS) chairman, while Ahmad Johnie Zawawi (PBB-Igan) had been appointed as the Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd chairman.

It also noted that Tan Sri Noh Omar (BN-Tanjung Karang) had been appointed as Perbadanan Usahawan Nasional Bhd (Punb) chairman, Sabri Azit (PAS-Jerai) appointed as Malaysian Institute of Translation & Books (ITMB) chairman of the board of directors.

Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir (Penang Umno chief) was appointed as the chairman of JKP Sdn Bhd, while Mohamad Husain (PAS central committee member) had been appointed as a Felcra board member.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor (Kedah Mentri Besar) and Juhari Bulat (Kedah assemblyman) were appointed to positions in the federal government's statutory body.

The Finance Ministry explained that the appointment of the politicians in the Minister of Finance Incorporated companies was based on their qualifications, expertise and their background which is needed by the companies to allow the board members to operate at the optimum level.

"The appointment as directors of board members of the companies had also taken into consideration the background and the capabilities of each individual from various perspectives to join as the board members of the companies," said the ministry in response to a question from Chan Foong Hin (PH-Kota Kinabalu), who asked the government to justify the appointments of politicians at various government-linked companies and statutory bodies under the Perikatan Nasional government.

The Finance Ministry said in principle, the rate of allowances and incentives eligible for the board members and chairmen vary according to the financial capabilities of each MKD company.

"The amount of remuneration and incentives paid can be obtained from the company's audited financial statements submitted to the Companies Commission of Malaysia.

"As for the Federal Statutory Body, the allowance rate is subject to the respective recommendations and approvals of its board members and minister in charge," it said.
