IPOH: Three elephants that were resting in the middle of the road of the East-West Highway near Gerik damaged a car after they became agitated by car honks and high-beam lights.
A car had stopped at the highway after spotting the animals on the road on Sunday night. Another car behind them started honking and flashing its high-beam lights, spooking the elephants.
It was then the animals approached the first vehicle, said Gerik OCPD Supt Zulkifli Mahmood. “All five passengers quickly got out from the car and ran away. The elephants then stomped on the car bonnet and damaged the right door and roof.
“The passengers, who were unharmed, then hitchhiked to an R&R area, ” Supt Zulkifli added.
“The Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) officers were alerted of the incident and they have inspected the area, ” he said.Perhilitan director Yusoff Shariff said motorists should be patient and not use their high-beam lights and honks at night should they encounter elephants.
