KUCHING: The Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sarawak Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud and Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg performed the Aidiladha prayers at the state mosque.

Also present were Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, who is the Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office for Islamic Affairs and Kuching North City Hall as well as Assistant Minister of Utilities (Water Supply) and other dignitaries.

According to Bernama, the prayer session was conducted in accordance with the standard operating procedure (SOP) of the Covid-19 pandemic prevention measures.

The same procedure was also conducted in mosques and surau around Kuching, as well as in several villages in Padawan and Bau.

Meanwhile, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal performed his prayers with a congregation of about 2,000 Muslims at the state mosque.

Shafie arrived at the mosque at 7.15am, accompanied by his wife Datin Seri Shuryani Shuaib.

A former civil servant Samie Andarsi, 60, said he was satisfied with the SOP carried out by the mosque.

Madlan Salaman, 35, was also grateful to be able to perform the prayers under the new normal.

Even though the mosque has the capacity to hold 5,000 people at any one time, the congregation present was only about half that in line with the practice of physical distancing.
