JOHOR BARU: Marine police arrested a 38-year-old man and seized more than RM300,000 of illicit cigarettes near Yong Peng in Batu Pahat.
Its commander Asst Comm Muhd Zailani Abdullah said based on intelligence, a team of marine police, with assistance from police, monitored a premise along Jalan Parit Yaani around 4.30pm on Wednesday (July 22).
“We suspected the premise to be a warehouse keeping illicit cigarettes, where after more than an hour of surveilling the premise, the suspect was found to be entering it.
“The team then immediately raided the premise, where they found several brown coloured boxes filled with unpaid customs duty,” he said in a statement here on Thursday (July 23).
ACP Zailani added further inspection found 19,350 packets of contraband cigarettes worth to be estimated at RM301,892, including unpaid taxes.
He also said that the case has been referred to Batu Pahat police headquarters for further investigation under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
ACP Zailani said marine police would double its operations and tighten the country’s maritime security from being abused by smuggling syndicates which have been changing tactics to cover up their tracks.
He urged the public to channel information on illegal activities to the marine police through its hotline number at 07-2372221.
