PETALING JAYA: More than 10,000 youths under the age of 35 will get the opportunity to gain work experience through the National Apprenticeship Scheme (SPN), launched on Wednesday (July 22) and is being spearheaded by the Youth and Sports Ministry.
Three ministries - Youth and Sports, Human Resources, and Works - have joined forces to implement the programme aimed at providing opportunities for youths to enhance skills and help them acquire work experience.
"The programme is based on place and train concept, and would provide opportunities for reskilling, upskilling and cross-skilling," said the Youth and Sports Ministry in a statement.
It added that the objectives of this programme include enhancing the marketability of apprentices through soft-skills and on-the-job training, and to provide a support system to help youths secure jobs.
"It will help reduce youth unemployment rate," the statement read.
The programme is open to SPM, certificate, diploma and degree holders. Under the programme, more than 10,000 youths holding papers recognised by the government would serve as trainee apprentices at various companies and organisations.
Some 500 local companies and 13 multinational corporations are participating in the programme aimed at training youths for the job market, and trainees will be given up to RM2,000 per month as an allowance, depending on the employer.
Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican, Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, and Human Resources Minister Datuk M. Saravanan jointly launched the programme in Putrajaya on Wednesday.
Perbadanan Sumber Manusia Berhad (PSMB), Pertubuhan Keselamatan Sosial (Perkeso), InvestKL, Federation of Malaysian Skills Development Centre (FMSDC) and the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) are among the strategic partners supporting the programme.
"SPN provides a quick solution to help many youths secure jobs, as the unemployment rate rose to 5.3 per cent in May," said Reezal.
He said it would also help address the anxiety over market challenges in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, as 300,000 fresh graduates would be entering the job market by October.
Meanwhile, InvestKL chief executive officer Azmi Zulkifli said the SPN programme would help protect, retain and attract talent and thus complement initiatives to draw foreign direct investment.
"Retaining a wide pool of a skilled, high-potential workforce would further strengthen Kuala Lumpur's position as a strategic commercial hub in Asia," he said.
