Armed robbery suspect nabbed in Sandakan, accomplice at large

KOTA KINABALU: A suspected armed robber in Sandakan district has been nabbed while his accomplice is on the run.

Sandakan OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Azhar Hamin said the 34-year-old suspect was arrested during a crackdown dubbed Ops Cantas at Singapore Road around 10pm Monday (July 13).

This came following reports of an armed robbery near SK Bandar Leila at 5pm earlier the same day, he said.

“The suspects allegedly robbed two joggers at knife-point of their personal belongings worth about RM1,000, ” he said.

ACP Azhar said the suspects were also believed to have robbed a couple aged 21 and 25, at knife-point and took off with valuables worth RM6,160 at a basketball court in Parkview Villa around 11.30pm, Sunday (July 12).

He said the couple told police they were approached by two suspects who came in a vehicle while they were eating at the basketball court.

“The frightened couple handed over two mobile phones, two gold rings and cash after one suspect pointed a knife at them, ” he added.

No one was seriously physically injured in these incidents.

ACP Azhar said a manhunt is being mounted for the second suspect.
