KUCHING: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president Tan Sri James Masing has welcomed Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun's appointment as Dewan Rakyat Speaker, saying that the former Election Commission chairman would be fair.
He expressed confidence that Azhar would ensure that Malaysian lawmakers behaved themselves while formulating laws to safeguard the nation.
"Art Harun should be a good and fair Speaker, being the former chairman of EC who did his task well. I am sure he will not tolerate our Parliament being like a fish market, where the quality of debate is judged by the volume of one's voice," Masing said in a statement on Monday (July 13).
He added that Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin "did well" to nominate Azhar to be the Speaker.
PRS is a component party of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition, which is aligned to the Perikatan Nasional government.
Azhar took his oath as Speaker earlier Monday after the Dewan Rakyat narrowly passed a motion to replace his predecessor Tan Sri Mohammad Ariff Md Yusof by 111 to 109 votes.
The proceedings on the opening day of the Dewan Rakyat's first full sitting since Perikatan came into power were marked by heated exchanges and shouting as Opposition MPs protested the manner of Azhar's appointment.
