SIBU: A construction worker from India died after he was hit by a metal pipe while carrying out piling work on a new jetty here on Wednesday (July 9).
The victim has been identified as Ashish Kumar, 24, from Mirzapur Uttar in India.
Sibu deputy OCPD Supt Collin Babat said in the 10am incident on Wednesday, the victim was involved in the building of a new jetty in the Rajang River, near Jalan Panasu, when a rope which attached the metal pipe to a crane snapped.
"The metal pipe dropped down at full force and hit the victim who was in a vessel underneath," he said.
The incident was witnessed by the supervisor of the jetty project and two other workers.
The victim, he added, was rushed to Sibu Hospital by the supervisor, accompanied by his workers.
"A doctor at the Emergency Unit of the hospital pronounced the victim dead at 12.25pm due to injuries to his head and back," Supt Babat said.
The case has been classified as sudden death.
