KOTA KINABALU: A group of Parti Warisan Sabah protem members from Kota Belud have decided to part with the party, saying they are tired of waiting for their official membership to be approved.
Kota Belud protem division chief and delegation head Awang Saleh Makmud said they suspected that their membership had not been approved due to an "elite group" in the party which were preventing newer members from joining the party.
“We were told of this elite group, which calls themselves the original fighters of Warisan, and this group apparently is not willing to accept new members just like that, ” he said.
Saleh added that they had waited for over a year, with many still to get their Warisan membership ID number.
“So we cannot move forward like this, especially now that it seems like an election is on the cards. And that is why we choose to just go our own way, ” said the former Umno member during a press conference here.
Saleh said a party’s strength was defined by the number of members it had.
“Without enough or a huge number of members, how can the party move and do things for the people?” he asked.
He said people were interested to join Warisan and the new government following the general election, but preventing people from joining would only cripple a party’s struggles.
According to Saleh, the group – from four divisions comprising some 500 members – would continue to serve the grassroots on their own.
