PUTRAJAYA: Wisma Putra will facilitate arrangements and diplomatic relations should the Home Ministry decide to allow Myanmar to repatriate its citizens who are in Malaysia without valid documents.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin had informed him of Myanmar’s request to fly back its citizens who are in Malaysia illegally.

“This is a matter for the Home Ministry to consider. Wisma Putra will wait for further deliberations from the Home Ministry before we move to facilitate any arrangements with Myanmar,” he said.

Hishammuddin was responding to reports that Myanmar had asked for Malaysia’s assistance in repatriating illegal foreign workers following reports that eight suicides of undocumented migrants from the country had taken place.

It was reported that thousands of unregistered Myanmar migrants are stranded here without work due to Covid-19 and crackdowns against undocumented foreigners are being done by authorities.

The Irrawaddy news outlet reported that two Myanmar migrants had committed suicide in Kuala Lumpur over the past week and six others had taken their lives in the past two months.

The news outlet said the director-general of Myanmar’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, U Aung Myint, met Malaysian ambassador to Myanmar Zahairin Baharim to request for cooperation in the repatriation of undocumented workers from the country.
