GEORGE TOWN: After perching on the ledge of an apartment block for more than an hour, a robbery suspect who resisted arrest finally surrendered to the authorities.
Using the rope rescue technique, a fireman was called in to bring the man down to the ground from the fourth floor of the block in Sungai Nibong.
The man, who was staying in a unit on the fifth floor, had climbed down to the ledge of an empty unit to evade the police.
A three-minute video showing him and the fireman abseiling from the block went viral.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong said the man was among seven suspects picked up in connection with a robbery at seven childcare centres in the state.
He said the Fire and Rescue Department was called in to bring the man down as he was “hiding” on the ledge at about 6.30pm on Tuesday.
“Our team from CID unit raided two different locations in Sungai Nibong following a public tip-off. During the second raid, the suspect climbed down to a ledge on level four to avoid arrest, ” said ACP Soffian.
“He refused to surrender despite being told to do so. Fearing for his safety, we had to call in the firemen to bring him down.”
With the arrest of the suspects, aged between 21 and 28, police believe they have solved at least seven robbery cases at childcare centres in George Town (three) and Balik Pulau (four) on the island.
