GEORGE TOWN: Seven men were detained by the police on suspicion of breaking into several childcare centres (Taska) in two districts on Penang island.

Northeast OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong on Wednesday (June 10) said the suspects were detained in two different locations in Sungai Nibong following raids on June 9.

He said the operation was conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) unit from northeast district police headquarters between 5pm and 6.30pm.

"All of the suspects were believed to be involved in breaking into three Taska in the northeast district, and four in the southwest district since March this year.

"The total losses resulting from their crime is about RM16,000," ACP Soffian said.

One of the suspects tried to evade the police during the operation and attempted to climb down from level five to level four through a window in one of the empty units of an apartment in Sungai Nibong at about 6.30pm, he said.

ACP Soffian said the suspect refused to surrender.

"We had to call in the Fire & Rescue Department to help us to bring the suspect down," he said.

He said the suspects arrested were aged between 21 and 28.

Six were found to have a record for drugs and criminal offences.

He said initial urine tests also found five of them positive with methamphetamine.

The case is being investigated under Section 457 for robbery.
