PETALING JAYA: Another three motorists have been arrested for drink driving, as police here continue their operations against driving under the influence.
Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal said the operations were held between 11pm and 3am on Tuesday (June 2).
"We checked 60 vehicles and 78 individuals during our operations at several locations around Petaling Jaya.
"We arrested three men, aged between 28 and 42, for driving under the influence of alcohol above the legal limit," he said in a statement on Wednesday (June 3).
He added police also issued nine summonses to motorists for various traffic offences during the operations.
"The three men were arrested under Section45(A)1 of the Road Transport Act.
"Based on our observations, even though we are continuously conducting operations, some motorists continue to drink and drive.
"Such behaviour not only endangers the motorist in question but also others on the road," he said.
ACP Nik Ezanee said since May 27, his personnel have checked 830 individuals and 803 vehicles through their operations.
"We have arrested 23 so far for drink driving.
"Our statistics show that since we began our operations in the district, a decrease in cases has occurred," he said, adding that they arrested six on May 29 and 31 respectively, compared with four on June 1 and 2 respectively.
He attributed the decrease to the police operations and comprehensive media coverage on the issue.
"We at Petaling Jaya police headquarters are grateful to the media for highlighting the issue and raising awareness to motorists of the dangers of drink driving.
"I urge the community to work with us to increase awareness on this issue so that we can eradicate driving under the influence of alcohol," he said.
