JOHOR BARU: A man was jailed five months by the Magistrate’s Court here for trespassing the Istana Pasir Pelangi grounds.

The accused, Juel Huran, 35, pleaded guilty after the court interpreter read the charge to him in front of magistrate Lee Jun Keong yesterday.

The offence was committed at Istana Pasir Pelangi here at 9.22am on May 22.

Juel had entered the palace grounds without any pass or permit issued by any authority or person in charge under the Prohibited Areas and Prohibited Places Act 1959 (Act 289).

The offence carries imprisonment of up to two years, a maximum RM1,000 fine or both, upon conviction.

The prosecution was represented by deputy public prosecutor Benedict Choong Kai Qi, while Juel was unrepresented.

In his plea, Juel requested for a lighter punishment as he has to take care of his unemployed wife and two children aged six and 10.

He worked as a hotel housekeeper before the movement control order was enforced and is currently unemployed.

In his judgment, Lee said the offence was serious and posed a threat to the residents of the palace.
