33 arrested for drinking at bars in Ipoh

Against the rules: The customers at a bar in Ipoh.

IPOH: Thirty-three people were detained by the police in two separate operations for defying the conditional movement control order (MCO).

In the first operation, the police raided a karaoke bar in Canning Estate, Ipoh Garden, and arrested four people at about 11.30pm on Tuesday.

Those arrested included the bar supervisor and three customers aged between 29 and 44, said Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm A. Asmadi Abdul Aziz.

“The supervisor opened the door and we moved in, identifying ourselves as the police.

“After entering the premises, we found three people and they could not provide reasonable explanations other than having a beer there. The police seized several licensing documents from the premises, ” he said.

In the second operation at 12.25am yesterday, ACP A. Asmadi said 29 people were arrested at a bar in Jalan Lau Ek Ching.

He said those arrested included the barkeeper and 28 customers.

“When we arrived at the premises, we found the door was locked from the inside. We knocked on the door several times and were greeted by the barkeeper.

“After identifying ourselves, we went in and found the customers, which included three women, enjoying themselves and drinking alcohol, ” he said.

ACP A. Asmadi said those arrested claimed they did not know that pubs were not allowed to operate and that any gatherings were also prohibited.

“The men have been placed at the central police station lock-up while the women were sent to the Pekan Baru station lock-up.

“All 33 people will be remanded to facilitate investigations under Rule 15 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Regulations 2020 and also Section 269 of the Penal Code for a negligent act that could spread an infectious disease, ” he said.
