KUALA LUMPUR: Throngs of people headed to the city Road Transport Department (JPJ) headquarters as it fully opened its counters for the first time on Monday (May 18) since the movement control order (MCO) began.
A check by The Star showed that all customers are required to follow the standard operating procedures (SOP) during the conditional MCO, including wearing face masks and practising social distancing.
Since 8am, the situation at the KL JPJ headquarters was bustling with people eager to settled various matters.
KL JPJ director Mohd Zaki Ismail said that customers needed to go through temperature screenings before they were permitted to enter the headquarters' main entrance.
"The public must follow instructions issued by security personnel as well as those manning the counters.
"They are also required to wear face masks and use hand sanitizer," he said when met at the office on Monday.
Practising social distancing is utmost important, he added.
"Only healthy customers and those who adhered to the SOPs are allowed to make transactions at the counters," he added.
Zaki reminded the public that they don't have to panic and storm JPJ counters.
"Private vehicles owners are still exempted from renewing their driving licence or motorcycle license on the condition that the vehicle insurance is still valid.
"I hope the people refrain from panicking and understand the exemptions given by the department," Zaki said.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong had announced previously that JPJ will operate seven-days-a-week to ensure all pending transactions for commercial or private vehicles, are completed as soon as possible to avoid any backlog.
Dr Wee had announced that the operational hours for JPJ offices are from 8am to 4pm during weekdays and 8am to 1pm on weekends.
Cash payments are permitted at JPJ offices from 8am to 11am while e-payments, through debit or credit cards, are accepted from 8am to 4pm on weekdays.
JPJ counters will be closed from May 23 to 26 in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.
