Political play in motion for upcoming Johor state assembly

JOHOR BARU: The one-day state assembly sitting on May 14 will be closely watched following talk of an ongoing attempt to remove the present Speaker in the latest twist of political play.

It is learnt that Perikatan Nasional, which has a two-seat lead over Pakatan Harapan, is planning to pass a motion of no confidence against Suhaizan Kayat.

Suhaizan said he was aware of such a move but there was nothing written in to the state assembly.

“I have heard about them talking about getting statuary declarations to move a no-confidence motion.

“We will see as, usually, all motions will need to get approval from the Speaker and if they have the numbers, ” he said.

Umno, PAS, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) along with an Independent candidate presently have 29 assemblymen while Pakatan Harapan has 27.

There are 56 seats in the Johor state assembly.

Suhaizan reiterated that Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was also expected to attend the one-day sitting. He is the Gambir assemblyman.

Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar is expected to open the assembly.

Asked whether the one-day sitting could be extended, Suhaizan said such a request needed to be put forward by the assemblymen if they had anything urgent to discuss.

“The one-day sitting in Penang, Kedah and Kelantan was done previously due to the Covid-19 crisis.

“We also slated ours for one day due to the Covid-19 crisis. If there is a need to extend, then the assemblyman can put that motion forward.”

Meanwhile talk is rife that the new Speaker might be a person who is not a politician.

A local Perikatan leader who declined to be named said this state assembly on May 14 was expected to be an interesting affair with at least one or two histories in the making, with one a sitting prime minister attending it and also the appointment of a non-politician as a possible Speaker.

He said Perikatan was not going to reveal the name of the possible new Speaker until the last minute, as they did not want any sabotage.

Meanwhile Johor Pakatan chief Aminolhuda Hassan said they too were aware of the attempt to change the Speaker using SDs.

He also said Pakatan assemblymen were of the view that the assembly sitting should be extended as there were many issues involving the people that needed to be discussed.
