KUANTAN: A notice of vacancy in the Pahang state assembly has been submitted to the Election Commission (EC) following the death of Chini assemblyman Datuk Seri Abu Bakar Harun (pic).
State assembly speaker Datuk Seri Ishak Muhamad handed the notice over to Pahang EC deputy director (operations) Ahmad Fadzli Rohimi Suhaimi on Friday morning (May 8).
EC chairman Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun said in a statement that the commission acknowledged the unexpected vacancy of the Chini state seat after the death of its assemblyman.
However, he said the EC must wait for Ishak's official confirmation of the vacancy for a by-election to be held.
Azhar also said the EC would hold a special meeting to discuss matters related to the by-election, and a date of the meeting would be announced in due course.
Bakar, a four-term assemblyman, died of an apparent heart attack early Thursday (May 7) morning.
The 60-year-old first won the seat in 2004 and last defended it in GE14, where he obtained 10,027 votes against Mohd Fadhil Noor Abdul Karim of PAS (5,405) and Mohamad Razali Ithnain of PKR (1,065 votes).
Chini is one of the four state seats under the Pekan parliamentary constituency held by former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
If a by-election is called, it would be the 11th since GE14.
