Acting on a tip-off, a team from the Bukit Aman Anti-Vice, Gambling and Secret Societies Division (D7) personnel led by Senior Asst Comm Mohd Zani Che Din raided a house in Ukay Heights at about 11am yesterday.
CID director Comm Datuk Huzir Mohamed said the 20 men and five women were believed to be involved in an illegal online gambling racket.
“We seized 19 laptops, 74 mobile phones, five routers and a desktop computer,” he said.
He said the syndicate hosted and promoted online gambling games catering to Chinese nationals, promoting their games via WeChat and text messages.
“Among the games offered were Lucky Draw Canada 28 and Beijing 28.
“Their customers would play the game by scanning QR codes,” he said.
Initial investigations revealed that the syndicate had been operating for about three months, he added.
“We believe they raked in about RM135,000 a day using the Renminbi denomination,” he said.
The suspects aged between 18 and 45 were from Jianxi and Guizhou provinces in China, he added.
“Those detained have been brought to the Ampang Jaya district police headquarters for further investigation,” Comm Huzir said.
The case was being investigated under Section 4(1)(a), (c) and (g) of the Open Gambling House Act 1953 and Section 6(1) of the Immigration Act 1969, he added.
