MERSING: A four-year-old boy died after his family’s home, which housed 18 people, caught fire at Kampung Bukit Pasir in Endau here.
Endau Fire and Rescue station chief Mohd Alias Hussin said they received a distress call at 9.19pm Tuesday (April 21) night.
He added that two fire engines, one emergency response vehicle and one utility vehicle with 21 firemen from the Endau and Mersing fire stations were deployed to the scene immediately.
“When we arrived at the scene, the house was about 70% damaged due to the fire while 17 individuals, including five children, escaped unhurt.
“We were told that a young child was still inside the house and checks found the victim’s lifeless body underneath the staircase inside the house at around 11.07pm, ” he said here on Wednesday (April 22).
Mohd Alias said the victim has been identified as Mohammad Faris Sohari and the body has been handed over to the police for further action.
He said the operation ended at around 1.09am and the cause of the fire was still being investigated.
Meanwhile, Mersing OCPD Supt Cyril Edwards, who confirmed the incident, said the family escaped the fire without realising the victim was still inside the house.
“During the panic, they forgot to ensure everyone was out of the house.
"By the time they realised the victim was missing, it was too late as the fire had already engulfed the house and made it impossible to enter," he said.
Supt Cyril said the police have classified the case as sudden death and the victim’s body has been sent to Mersing Hospital for a post-mortem.
