MIRI: The Covid-19 battle at divisional and district levels in Sarawak should be led by health and medical experts – retired or otherwise – suggests Miri MP Dr Michael Teo.

The state government on Tuesday (April 14) announced that they were recruiting two retired state health directors, Dr Jamilah Hashim and Datuk Dr Andrew Kiyu, to head the state-level Covid-19 taskforce.

Dr Teo, who is a medical doctor and PKR Sarawak deputy president, said bringing in Dr Jamilah and Dr Kiyu was the right move.

"Health and medical experts are the ones with the knowledge and experience to handle health crises, not politicians.

"The state government must also bring in retired health experts to lead the Covid-19 fight in the 32 districts and divisions throughout Sarawak (who) will then be able to more effectively understand instructions and plans from Dr Jamilah and Dr Kiyu," he told The Star.

He said that health crises are very different from natural disasters.

"Natural disasters like floods and drought can be handled by politicians. Health crises need to be handled by people with very specialised training and years of experience and knowledge about the specific health threats, as these involve life and death matters," he said.

Dr Teo said he was confident that Dr Jamilah and Dr Kiyu will be able to help Sarawak to handle the Covid-19 crisis, which has claimed 14 lives and infected 363 people in the state as of Tuesday.
