MELAKA: The newly-appointed Mayor and council chiefs here have been given a task – to make the state great again in terms of cleanliness.
Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Sulaiman Md Ali said he hoped that the newly-appointed mayor and council presidents fulfil his wish of turning the historic city into a squeaky-clean tourist destination.
"Hopefully, we regain our crown as one of the cleanest cities in the country," he said after the swearing-in ceremony of the mayor and three council presidents on Monday (April 6).
Datuk Zainal Abu was appointed as the mayor of the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB), Mohd Fadhil Hassan as Alor Gajah Municipal Council (MPAG) president, Sapiah Haron as Jasin Municipal Council (MPJ) president and Shadan Othman as Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal Council (MPHTJ) president.
Zainal, Sapiah and Shadan had previously served as mayor and council presidents while Mohd Fadhil was the former Melaka Road Transport Department (JPJ) director.
Earlier, the Chief Minister distributed food kits prepared by the state to all assemblymen including those from the Opposition.
Sulaiman said he hoped that the assistance reached those affected by the movement control order (MCO).
There had been criticism from locals recently, with claims that the food kits were only distributed to politically-linked groups and did not reach the targeted recipients.
