PETALING JAYA: Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin has been named as the new Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) secretary-general.
Hamzah will replace Datuk Marzuki Yahya who was relieved from the secretary-general post effective March 18, said party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in a statement Thursday (March 26).
"Therefore, he (Hamzah) will take over the duties of the secretary-general in line with the party constitution which must be carried out by Hamzah," added Muhyiddin.
A letter from Muhyiddin addressed to Marzuki stated that he was being relieved of his post as party secretary-general effective March 18.
Marzuki is currently in the running for the post of deputy president in the inaugural party polls. He was nominated by Kedah Mentri Besar and former Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir.
His nomination was seconded by former prime minister and Bersatu chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Marzuki, a senator, was the former deputy foreign minister in the previous Pakatan Harapan government under Dr Mahathir.
Muhyiddin also thanked Marzuki for his contribution to the party as the previous secretary-general.
