PETALING JAYA: The extension of the movement control order (MCO) is necessary, otherwise we would never be able to stop the spread of Covid-19, says former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

In a video statement issued from his house in Sri Kembangan, Dr Mahathir said that it was an unusual disease even though the country had previously managed to curb the spread of other infectious diseases.

"The MCO has been extended to April 14. Although this restricts our freedom of movement, I feel this is an order we have to follow for our own safety and the safety of our family.

"This is because this disease (Covid-19) is still spreading fast in Malaysia.

"There are more than 100 people who are falling sick every day, and if we don't separate ourselves from friends and families, the disease will continue and many of us Malaysians will be infected.

"This disease is unusual, although we have had SARS and H1N1. This time, we have yet to have the vaccine or medicines which will stop this disease from spreading.

"The best way is to isolate ourselves from friends and families, so that we do not infect them if we have the sickness and we too would not be infected if we were to shake hands and touch those who have the sickness.

"We must be disciplined.

"If we aren't, this disease will continue and we ourselves will be infected.

"We must adhere to the order and find something worthwhile to do to kill our boredom. God-willing, if we follow and are disciplined, the (spread of) disease will be less and we may have a vaccine which will stop its spread," said Dr Mahathir.

The 95-year-old himself was asked to self-isolate recently after he came into contact with a positive patient.

However, he was declared free of the disease after a few tests.
