PETALING JAYA: Those with an expired driving licence do not need to renew it during the movement control order (MCO) period, says Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

“Anyone who has an expired driving licence can still use their respective vehicles on the condition that the vehicle has valid insurance coverage. Previously, driving licence holders were told to renew their licence online via the mySikap JPJ and MyEG portals during the MCO period.

“However with this announcement, people are exempted from the requirement to renew their driving licence during the MCO period, ” he said in a statement.

This applies to holders of the competent driver’s licence (CDL), the public service vehicle (PSV) licence and the goods driving licence (GDL).

However, expired licences need to be renewed within 30 days after the last day of the MCO.

Drivers, he said, were advised to bring a copy of the insurance certificate or e-cover insurance note while driving during the MCO period.

For GDL holders, he said they were not subject to Puspakom inspections and health checks during the MCO period as they were exempted from renewing their licence.

However, Dr Wee clarified that commercial vehicle owners are to renew their road taxes within 30 days after the MCO period ends, and will be subject to prevailing requirements.

He added that there were 2,753 drivers whose GDL would expire by March 31.

Dr Wee said such measures were taken after taking into account the difficulty of Malaysians in renewing their driving licence, vocational driving licence and road tax for commercial vehicles.

“Such measures were made after the Transport Ministry took the initiative to hold discussions with various parties, such as the General Insurance Association of Malaysia and the Takaful industry.

“Most importantly, this is done with the purpose of ensuring the supply of essential goods, especially food, to the rakyat will not be interrupted during the MCO period,” he said.
