Man charged with cheating over sale of face masks

KUALA LUMPUR: A massage parlour caretaker was charged at a magistrate’s court here with cheating a Chinese national tourist in connection with the purchase of face masks, involving losses of RM20,000.

Chong Chan Wai, 33, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him before magistrate Tawfiq Affandy Chin.

He was charged with cheating Lin Zhang by deceiving the woman into believing that the he would sell face masks, prompting the victim to hand over RM20,000 at a bank in Seri Petaling here between Feb 9 and 16.

The charge, under Section 420 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum of 10 years’ jail with whipping and also liable to a fine, upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Najihah Farhana Che Awang appeared for the prosecution while the accused was unrepresented.

The court then allowed him bail of RM6,000 in one surety and fixed May 14 for case mention. — Bernama
