TUMPAT: A total of 285kg of ketum leaves worth RM25,650 were seized from smugglers near the Thailand-Malaysia border around 1am yesterday under Ops Gelora by the Pengkalan Kubor Region 3 Marine Police.

Four officers patrolling in an interceptor boat spotted two men unloading bags of the leaves from a car into a boat at an illegal jetty on Sungai Mentua, said Region 3 Marine Police operations base commanding officer Asst Supt Mohd Rudzuan Ahmad.

“However, the smugglers escaped in their car when they saw the marine police coming, leaving behind the bags in the boat.

“Upon inspection, 19 15kg bags of ketum leaves suspected destined for a neighbouring country were found in the boat,” ASP Mohd Rudzuan said during a press conference yesterday.

The case will be investigated under Section 30 (3) of the Poisons Act 1952.
