Driver drowns after car plunges into Miri River

MIRI: A man drowned after the car he was driving overshot a road and plunged into the Miri River.

The Miri Fire and Rescue Department diving unit found the man drowned inside his vehicle at around 12.15am Monday (Mar 9).

The incident occurred at Kg Pulau Melayu, located along the river bank near here.

The Miri Fire and Rescue Department said its search-and-rescue team responded to an emergency alert from villagers who saw the car plunging into the murky river after it sped off the road.

"Our divers were deployed to search the riverbed after they pinpointed the spot where the car had plunged.

"The victim was found drowned inside his car," the department said in its updates Tuesday.

Th vehicle was later pulled to the surface with the help of a crane.

The police have been notified and the victim has only been identified as a middle-aged man so far.
