GEORGE TOWN: A gardener was jailed three years and fined RM10,000 in default a year’s jail by the Sessions Court here after he admitted to abusing his 10-year-old stepdaughter with a heated knife.

The 36-year-old man pleaded guilty to committing the offence at about 12.30am on Feb 11 at an apartment in Lebuh Macallum here.

Judge Norsalha Hamzah ordered the man to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest on Feb 20.

Norsalha said it was a serious offence as the case involved a child.

The charge was read out several times in Bahasa Malaysia and Tamil to ensure he understood the charge.

The man, who was unrepresented, in mitigation, pleaded to the court for leniency as he was the main caretaker of the victim and his wife, who is expecting a child soon.

Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Fatin Hussin asked the court to impose an appropriate sentence, saying: “As a father, even a stepfather, he should protect the child like his own and not abuse her.

“She has not only suffered physical trauma but mental trauma as well.”
