KUALA LUMPUR: Umno prays for Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's good health, even though he has stung them with his words, says Umno party-secretary-general Tan Sri Annuar Musa.
He said that as much as Umno members were hurt by the references to Umno in the special address of interim Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir on Wednesday (Feb 26), the leadership of Umno understood what the 94-year- old was going through.
"Dr Mahathir made inferences which touched on Umno, and that has hurt our feelings.
"We take the attitude of moderation on the speech by Dr Mahathir. Umno understands the situation Dr Mahathir is in.
"What is happening right now also did in a way result from the doings of Dr Mahathir himself.
"Even though what you said (on Umno) hurt us, we hope our Umno members will be patient and open-minded.
"We have been tested with much crueller slander, and as such but we leave it to God, as God is with those who are patient.
"We in Umno pray for Dr Mahathir to be given good health and calmness, while we in Umno continue our struggle with a strong heart to continue our struggle to uphold truth and the good of the nation and country.
"We will not drag this issue further," said Annuar.
He said this at a press conference after the Umno supreme council met with 180 of 191 division leaders from nationwide except for the state of Sabah.
On Feb 26, in a special televised address, Dr Mahathir gave the reasons for his resignation as Prime Minister on Monday (Feb 24).
"The opportunity to change leadership is always there. Only that, I am of the opinion that since I was supported by both sides, the time has not come for me to step down.
"I asked for more time, but my Parti Bersatu decided to leave Pakatan Harapan. There were also members from other component parties who left. With such actions, the Pakatan Harapan government collapsed.
"The consequence was if Bersatu supported PAS and Umno, then the parties which lost would be the one forming the government. The government will then be dominated by Umno as the biggest party.
"I am prepared to accept Umno members who have left Umno and joined other parties. But Umno will join the non-partisan government as Umno. This I could not accept. Thus, I had to resign," said Dr Mahathir.
